Sweden launches $1.4 billion air support package for Ukraine.
Sweden has announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine valued at 12.9 billion Swedish krona, equivalent to $1.4 billion USD, with a particular focus on bolstering air defenses. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson stated that this package represents Sweden’s third-largest military contribution to Ukraine to date and directly responds to Ukrainian requests, specifically regarding securing air defense and providing ammunition for previously delivered equipment.
Approximately 4.3 billion Swedish krona will be directed towards strengthening Ukraine’s short-range air defense capabilities, including the delivery of additional mobile anti-aircraft systems, “TRADON MK2,” which were initially announced for Ukraine in early February. Sweden plans to deliver these systems within 24 months.
In addition, the aid package will include significant quantities of ammunition, including long-range artillery shells, training programs, and an expansion of existing cooperation with Ukraine regarding long-range drones.
This package falls within an annual budget of 40 billion Swedish krona allocated to support Ukraine, with details regarding the allocation of the remaining 27 billion krona to be announced in the coming months.
With this package, Sweden’s total military support to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022 reaches approximately 103 billion Swedish krona, including the delivery of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, Archer artillery systems, as well as tanks and amphibious assault boats.
