Mecca supplied with ingenuity: The Shuaybah 5 station completes water supply without additional cost.

The Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) has achieved a significant increase in production capacity at the Shuqaiq 5 desalination plant, successfully raising its output by 11% to 665,000 cubic meters per day, up from 600,000, without any additional project costs.

The company stated that this increase strengthens the water system’s capabilities, ensures supply sustainability, and achieves optimal infrastructure investment while adhering to the highest standards of energy efficiency and operation.

This achievement has garnered international recognition, with the project registering a record in the Guinness World Records for the lowest energy consumption in reverse osmosis technology, at 1.7 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter of desalinated water, thanks to the high efficiency of its national engineering teams.

The system also won the "Asian Water Awards" for 2025 for achieving zero carbon emissions, confirming the Kingdom’s leadership in the design and operation of highly efficient and environmentally conscious seawater desalination plants.

These accomplishments have enhanced the Kingdom’s position on the global stage and received praise from the World Bank, which described the Shuqaiq 5 experience as a pioneering and inspiring model for improving energy efficiency in the global desalination sector.

This outstanding performance directly contributes to strengthening water supply security in the Makkah Al-Mukarramah region, ensuring sufficient water availability during peak seasons such as Ramadan and Hajj to efficiently meet the needs of pilgrims and Umrah performers.

The company affirms that this achievement is part of its ongoing efforts to support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, reduce carbon emissions by more than two million tons annually, and adopt environmentally friendly technologies, thereby enhancing resource sustainability and solidifying the Kingdom’s leading position in the global water sector.
